PTSD Short Film (Anidoc)
Log Line
This short animation explores the relationship between pets and mental health, focusing specifically on how Oscar (my dog) has has helped me through my experience with PTSD.
The UK is currently experiencing a mental health epidemic, with 5,583 suicides registered in England and Wales in the year 2021(Office for National Statistics, 2022). This number is on the rise, so I feel that mental health in general is such an important issue to speak up about. Pets can make a massive impact on an individuals emotional wellbeing by combating issues such as loneliness and isolation. A 2018 study found that service dogs helped reduce symptoms of veterans experiencing PTSD, proving that companionship is a massively important tool in recovery (O’Haire and Rodriguez, 2018) .
Intended Audience
This animation is aimed towards young adults who experiences challenges with their mental health. This is achieved through the narrative. I am also using a more textured and rough art style than usual in order to create a sense of nostalgia, perhaps reminding my audience of a diary page. I have reached this audience by posting on social media.
Artistic Approach
I wanted to create a lot of texture in my animation, taking inspiration from tactile children’s books. This will hopefully create a nostalgic and cosy vibe to the animation. In terms of colour, I thought it would be on theme to use minimal colours. I wanted the visual style to somewhat mimic a diary page, or handwritten note so I used a pencil-textured brush on an off white background.
Poetry Film - Little Things by Jacob Polley
Log Line
This poetry animation, which was made in collaboration with Forward Prizes for Poetry, features two key themes of Jacob Polley’s “little things”; memories and nature. The narrative, is intended to be abstract, focusing more on representing key ideas rather than telling a story.
Context
My main goal in this project was to convey the key themes of the poem by incorporating elements of both nature and memory. I used nature as a metaphor for memories and vice-versa in order to create a more abstract narrative so that my animation compliments the poem, rather than just retelling it.
Trailer For Brighton International Animation Festival
The Brighton International Animation Festival is an annual festival in Brighton that takes place in April. This was a great opportunity to have my work showcased in front of a live audience. I was asked to incorporate the key words of “Brighton” and “animation”
My final animation needed to reference the key themes of “animation” and “Brighton”, which allowed me a lot of freedom in terms of potential ideas. Since the duration of the animation was quite short, I wanted the narrative to be simple and easy to follow but also visually appealing and memorable.
